People Who Help Us

A busy start to our term getting stuck into our new topic; People Who Help Us. Here are just some of the things we have got up to in Unicorn Class…

The children enjoyed exploring the text ‘Supertato’ developing their comprehension skills as they retold the story and created story maps. They even had a go at making their own ending to the story! The children loved being the ‘author’ and came up with some very creative ideas. We used our phonics knowledge to caption pictures from the story.

We have also had fun designing our own ‘Supertatoes’. Children used their fine motor skills to poke pipe cleaners and sticks into the potatoes to become arms and legs and their mark making skills drawing faces. We enjoyed reenacting parts of the story with them.

In our role play area we worked together to set up a shop. The children decided they wanted to have a cafe in the shop. Children have loved role-playing in the area, developing their communication and social skills as well as their understanding of the responsibilities of running a shop!

In maths we have been looking at different representations of numbers to 5. We have continued to develop our ‘subitising eyes’ to see how many of something there is without counting. We are now beginning to look at the different ways we can make five out of parts using part-whole models.
